Our easy apple crisp recipe has a deliciously rich history. It debuted in our first Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book in 1950. Known also as “Apple Crumble,” this recipe was very similar to today’s recipe, except it didn’t contain oats. It was updated for the 1956 version of the cookbook, adding oats, and is essentially the same recipe we have today.
When the autumn air turns chilly, this is the go-to apple crisp recipe for over 800 of our fans. Fresh and tender, juicy apple slices are perfectly complemented and nestled under a blanket of brown sugar, oats, butter and fall spices. It’s a simple treat that goes from casual family suppers to potlucks or even brunch.

Dump cakes became popular when cake mixes were introduced and are considered a classic American dessert. They usually contain fruit (traditionally pie filling), dry cake mix, and butter. As you can guess by their name, the ingredients are dumped into the pan without any mixing, which means getting this 3-ingredient apple cake into the oven can be done with little to no effort at all.
The consistency of dump cakes is more like a fruit cobbler or fruit crisp than they are cake-like. Other ingredients such as nuts and spices can be added for endless variations and to make it your own. They are heavenly served warm with ice cream or whipped cream on top.
Because of its simplicity to get it to the oven, it’s a terrific end to any weeknight meal or whenever you are in the mood for a sweet treat! It also feeds a crowd, so it’s a great one to bring to a potluck. If someone you love is feeling ill, this comforting recipe will bring them a lot of cheer while being quick and easy for you to throw together. This homey, casual dessert with fresh apples is great to serve anytime of the year.

This delightful Caramel Apple Bars recipe pairs two fall favorites: it’s a combination of apple crisp and caramel apples, baked into scrumptiously shareable caramel apple crisp bars. With fresh sliced apples and melted caramel nestled between two layers of buttery brown sugar-oat streusel, it’s the perfect fall dessert.
This is one of our favorite fall baking recipes, because it features classic autumn flavors, it’s a great way to use up apples from an orchard trip and it only takes 20 minutes of hands-on time.
