3 cups (6 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
9 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
4 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons maple extract
3/4 cup heavy cream

Instructions
Step 1
Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease bottom of 3 6” round pans.
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl beat the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined.
Step 3
Divide the batter evenly between the pans. Bake 26 to 31 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
Step 4
In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and salt with an electric mixer on low speed until smooth.
Step 5
Add in the vanilla extract and heavy cream and beat until combined.
Step 6
Increase speed to medium and beat until fluffy.
Step 7
Set aside 5 cups of buttercream frosting. Tint 4 cups dark purple by adding a few drops of food gel at a time and stirring between each addition until the desired color is reached. Leave one cup white.
Step 8
Tint the remaining buttercream frosting light purple by adding 1 drop of food gel at a time and stirring between each addition until the desired color is reached.
